The motorists? Read here. It’s been known for years that many drivers on our roads do not possess valid driving licenses and of those who do, a significant proportion actually ‘bought’ theirs. The Road Transport Department is one of the most corrupt governmental departments. Just ask any driving schools. Just ask any Malaysian drivers. No action has been taken against these corrupt agents who are meant to ensure that drivers who take to the roads are competent and won’t pose a danger to other road users.

Then we have the Mat Rempits, who are a law unto themselves.

Of course you then have the problem of vehicles that may not be roadworthy being driven on the roads. Cars are way too expensive and most of them are badly maintained. Even new cars of the Proton make don’t have basic safety features such as airbags.

Not to forget the atrocious conditions of the roads.

Given all the above, is it a wonder that road deaths are high in Malaysia?

This is but only the latest reported incident involving Mat Rempits, an euphemism for illegal racers. They have resorted to stoning the police, a sign that they have no fear for anyone. If you intend to drive around in the city in the early mornings or on weekends, you should be very careful. Should you be so ‘unlucky’ to encounter one of these mobs-on-wheels and you are involved in an incident with them, whether or not it’s your fault, for your own safety, you should drive to the nearest police station.

But we live in a lawful society, you say? So what are the authorities doing about this? Don’t despair, they are taking the lead. They are doing this.
What on earth was the deputy UMNO Youth leader thinking of? Of course it was a publicity stunt, but what message is he sending out? That law breakers are welcome to join UMNO? Then maybe he should tell all policemen to keep the UMNO application forms handy. Everytime someone breaks the law, they should be given the chance to join the party!

I hope the police take action soon against the Mat Rempits and arrest (pun intended) the menace before it gets out of hand. As it is, they already rule the streets at night. Do we really want them to take over the country?
